Raymond Glenn Spencer

RAYMOND GLENN SPENCER Ray Spencer, a life-long resident of Bend Oregon, passed away July 11, 2020. He was born August 8, 1932 to William and Beatrice Skaggs Spencer. Ray had three daughters, Cindy, Cathy and Connie with his first wife, Babetta Spencer, and one daughter, Deanne, with his third wife, Peggy Wonser Spencer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard and sister, Joyce Ann Morris, and daughter Cathy Spencer Payne. Ray, a second-generation plumber, owned Ray Spencer Plumbing and Heating for over 60 years. He viewed plumbing skills as an art and perfection was the standard to which he held himself. As a young boy he helped his dad who was one of Bend's first steam heating plumbers, re-bricking most every boiler in Bend. He and his dad worked on Timberline Lodge, Crater Lake Lodge, Mt Bachelor and schools all over the state, just to name a few. Ray's standard of perfection was not just limited to plumbing; he was an avid hunter, fisherman and coastal seafood sportsman. A gourmet cook of all he hunted and caught, he never let any go to waste. Ray grew up in a much more rural Bend where wildlife was plentiful and people lived close to the land. It was hard for Ray to watch Bend leave behind the small-town feel. He was known for his adventures and had an impeccable memory which made for good story-telling. If you spent any time with him in his truck you had a story to tell. Just going to the grocery store could be an adventure. He had a remarkable ability to get himself out of any situation no matter how harrowing. Ray would get you home safe, but not without a story and a stiff drink. His strength, determination and tenacity defined the incredible man he was. Ray was a lifetime member of the Elks, Oregon Hunter's Association and for many years was on the Board of Ducks Unlimited where he and his buddies experienced enormous success and great fun at the Annual fundraiser gathering. He lived through wars, The Depression and recessions, great economic growth and world-changing events. There are no words to express the loss of this man of old-fashioned standards, who loved and provided well for his family. His wisdom and experience will be missed by all who knew him. Ray did not fear death and is now at rest with his Heavenly Father. A Memorial Service will be held at Deschutes Memorial Gardens on August 8th at 11:00 am. CoViD precautions will be taken with social distancing and masks required. We suggest you bring a lawn chair and hat. The family wants to thank Partners in Care (hospice) for their wonderful care.
