John Paul Carroll

We have lost our beloved husband, father and grandfather. In his own words, he’s gone to be with the angels. He will be dearly missed. John (Jay) Carroll was born to Thomas R. Carroll and Helen Brady Carroll on June 28, 1935, in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. Although he grew up in the city, Jay spent his summers at Camp Kawanhee in Weld, Maine. It was there that he developed a lifelong love of sports, the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. During the school year, he attended Englewood School for Boys. Jay graduated from Dartmouth College in 1957, and Albany Medical college in 1961. During his time in Albany, he met Carol Ann Gibeault, a nursing student. They fell in love and were married on July 7, 1962. After completing their degrees, they relocated to Providence where Jay completed his medical residency in orthopedic surgery at Rhode Island Hospital. He later served as a captain in the United States Air Force where he directed the orthopedic clinic at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Following Jay’s service, he returned with his family to the east coast where he started his first private practice in Holyoke, Massachusetts. However, thoughts of the west remained. During his flights over the Pacific Northwest while serving in the Air Force, Jay had become captivated by the natural beauty surrounding Bend. His vision became a reality when he was accepted as a new physician at the Bend Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic. In 1970, he and Carol moved their growing family to Bend. For many years, Jay’s Sundays followed a familiar rhythm. When it was not hunting season, he often made early-morning rounds at the hospital, attended Mass, and then spent the afternoon shooting trap. During hunting season, he frequently traveled on Saturdays to care for patients in remote areas of eastern Oregon. Along the way, he usually managed to find a little time for hunting or fishing. Arriving in Bend when it was still a small logging and outdoor community, he provided essential trauma, fracture, and reconstructive orthopedic care to generations of Central Oregon families. His career spanned a formative period in the development of orthopedic medicine in the region and helped lay the foundation for the practice that would later become The Center. Jay practiced medicine in Central Oregon until his retirement in 1998. He was a respected member of the region’s medical community and helped establish the reputation of the Bend Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic during its years as an independent medical partnership. Jay passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on August 4, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol; their five children, Thomas and his wife, Susan; Elizabeth and her husband, Tom Rhody; Jennifer and her husband, Lance Judd; Kathryn and her husband, Rick Falk; and Matthew and his wife, Shannon; as well as twelve grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas R. and Helen B. Carroll. Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home was honored to handle the arrangements.
