Carol Hill Pickard

Carol Hill Pickard passed away in Sunriver, Oregon on December 28, 2024. Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on March 2nd, 1954, Carol was the daughter and only child of Clarence LeRoy Hill and Lillian Redkey Hill. Carol went to Henley for elementary, junior high school and high school. She graduated in 1972 and matriculated at Oregon State University that Fall – graduating from OSU in the Spring of 1976 having majored in clothing and textiles in the school of home economics. She then went on to get her law degree from the Marshall Wythe School of Law of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia receiving her juris doctor degree in May of 1979. Carol joined the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) corps as a Captain in the U.S. Army in August of 1979 having passed the Virginia Bar during the Spring . She then passed the Oregon Bar and the California Bar. Her first assignment was to the JAG school in Charlottesville, Virginia. Then she was assigned to Fort Ord in Monterey, CA. She represented the army and the accused in litigation, and helped service members with real estate, family law, estate planning and other matters. Carol remained at Fort Ord until late 1980, when she voluntarily transferred to the Oakland Army Base in Oakland, CA. Oakland Army Base was a transportation command responsible for shipping Army equipment and personal goods for army members anywhere within the Pacific Rim. Carol worked on all types of legal matters that arose at the Oakland Army Base while she was stationed there. In early 1984, Carol received an honorable discharge and resigned her commission to accept a civilian position with the U.S. Navy. She litigated construction cases for the U.S. Navy until the summer of 1987. She resigned from that position to accept a position as an associate at the San Jose law firm then called Stenberg McKenney and Sunseri. She practiced insurance defense law representing insurance company insureds from 1988 until 2010. She was made a name partner of Stenberg, McKenney, Sunseri, Roe and Pickard in 1991. That firm became Stenberg, Sunseri, Roe, Pickard & Rudy after Kevin McKenney became a Santa Clara County Judge. Carol married her law school classmate, Rich Pickard September 6, 1981 at The Elks Club in Klamath Falls, OR. They have 3 children, Rob (41), Jake (40) (Katie) and Jamie (she, her) (36) (Charlie). Carol became a grandmother to Leo (3) and Hank (1) when Jamie and Charlie had 2 sons. All survive Carol. Carol volunteered as a soccer and baseball/softball coach for her children’s teams. She served on the board of the Honor’s College at OSU from approximately 2006 to 2017. She also served on the board of the OSU Foundation from 2018 – 2022. Unfortunately, Carol suffered from cognitive memory impairment from 2018-2019. In January 2020, she was diagnosed with dementia from Alzheimer’s disease. She passed away from the side effects of Alzheimer’s disease. She was buried in Bend, OR on January 13, 2025. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Honors College at Oregon State University. Niwonger-Reynolds Funeral Home in Bend, Oregon, was honored to serve the family.
