Karl W. Goshorn, Jr.

Karl Wellington Goshorn, Jr. passed away December 15, 2021 at Hospice House of Bend, OR surrounded by his family, at the age of 86. He was known as a loving and faithful husband, Father and Shepard to those who worked with him. Karl was born in Agra, Oklahoma, October 23, 1935, to Karl Sr. and Ida (Cummings) Goshorn. His father's work moved the family to Yuma, AZ, where he was raised, then on to Port Orford, OR where he graduated from High School in 1954. He went on to attend OIT (then named Oregon Technology Institute) in Klamath Falls, OR. There he studied mechanics and fabrication. From 1956-1960 Karl served in the United States Coast Guard. During that time, he met and fell in love with his first sweetheart, Dica Roberts. They were married Aug. 3, 1957 in Coquille. They were stationed in Washington State his entire tour. Upon his honorable discharge as Engineman 2nd Class, they eventually moved back to Coquille where he was employed by Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) as a mechanic from 1961-1967. In 1961, Lisa his second sweetheart was born. He was then transferred to Bend, OR where he later retired in 1994. While still employed by ODOT, Karl taught night classes at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) in the continuing education automotive center. He instructed diesel, gasoline, electrical and hydraulic mechanics. Upon retirement from ODOT, he became fleet mechanic for COCC for over fifteen years. Karl loved his Lord and Savior, his family, his church family, teaching Sunday School for decades, tinkering with anything mechanical, hunting mule deer, geese and fishing. One of the highlights of his life was when he and Dica spent nearly 25 years annually taking clothes, stuffed animals and other much needed items to impoverished families in Mexico. Often it was just before Christmas time when those the items were dispersed to the families who lived at the Puerto Vallarta dump. Many years have been spent with dear friends, Harold and JoAnn Marken. Together, they traveled to France, England, Belgium, Canada, Hawaii and California. Karl is survived by Dica, his wife of over 64 years; daughter Lisa (Tony) Swinney; sister Barbara McHenry; sister-in-law Marlene (Jack) Lowe; nephew David (Kim) McHenry, niece Angela (Mark) Jensen; nephew Ron (Cathy) McHenry; nephew Dan (Jennifer) McHenry; numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, nephew Michael Lowe, in-law's Archie and Opal Roberts and brother-in-law Michael McHenry. Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan's Purse (samaratinspurse.org) in lieu of flowers. Funeral service will be Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021 at Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel 105 NW Irving Ave, Bend, OR at 11 a.m. The family will have a private internment. Family and friends are invited to share thoughts, memories or condolences. Niswonger-Reynolds is in charge of arrangements.
