Jon Lorberau

Jon Lorberau passed away peacefully on May 6, 2022, after a short battle with complications from a diagnosis of leukemia. Jon was born October 7, 1955, in Nagoya, Japan, where his father was stationed in the Air Force. He was one of six children. The family settled in the Tacoma area when his father retired from the Air Force. Jon met his wife Karen at Washington State University the fall after Mt St Helens blew and they married in January 1984. Jon earned degrees in Finance and an MBA at WSU, then embarked on a career in banking, eventually moving up the ladder to become Treasurer at Bank of the Cascades in Bend, Oregon. That career ladder took the family from Washington State to Texas and a final move to Bend, Oregon, in 2011. He likes to tell the stories about his time at Washington Mutual as it was an interesting time in the banking industry. In his career, he mentored many of his direct reports to make something more of themselves in their careers. He often told them, "if you are still working for me in the same position in a year, I'm not doing my job." He was kind and empathetic and always generous with his time and expertise in his career. He was no less generous with his family, helping his sisters in numerous ways when his parents took ill, remodeling his sister's home, and generally providing all types of fix-it expertise. He was a self-made handy person and loved remodeling every home his family lived in, and working on every car that he owned, and there were many of both. He loved fly fishing, golf, good food (he took up gourmet cooking in the last few years), and travel. After working hard in banking for many years, Karen finally convinced him to do some travelling before their retirement years, and he later said that was the best decision they ever made. Countries visited include the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Austria, among others, and Jon travelled for work to Libya just before the Arab Spring. He leaves behind his wife, Karen, his daughter Kelsey and her fiancée Lars of Tromso, Norway; son Mitchell and partner Adriana Carlos of Seattle, WA; sisters Heidi and Teresa of Tacoma, WA; brother Kevin and wife Virginia of Maricopa, AZ; brother Mark and wife Nikki of Tacoma, WA; and brother Shane of Tacoma, WA. He was preceded in death by his father Carl and his mother Claudia. He was a proud, dedicated, and loving father to his two children, Kelsey and Mitchell, and a loving husband to Karen for 38 years. A private family celebration will be held.
