James Larry O'Donnell

James was born February 16, 1933, in Bend, Oregon to John and Ethel (Wyatt) O’Donnell. He attended Kenwood Elementary School and graduated from Bend High School in 1951. He married Mary Posvar on October 6, 1952. They were married for 67 years. Mary passed away in July 2020. He was drafted into the Army shortly after they were married, reporting for duty in February 1953 with basic training at Fort Ord, California. After basic he shipped out to Korea, stopping in Eta Jima, Japan for radio school. He was assigned to KMAG in Taegu, South Korea. In December 1954, he returned to his job at Safeway in Bend. He was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency, reporting for duty in January 1957. During his career with the agency, he lived with his family in Virginia, England, Hawaii, Taiwan, and Israel. He also had extended trips to Norway, Ghana, Liberia, and Nigeria. He traveled for short trips on business to the Philippines, Greece, and India. After he retired from government service, he worked for Computer Science Corp and Rockwell International. In 1996, James and his wife returned to Bend to spend their retirement years. They liked going on long drives in the forest and having picnics. James also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, growing a garden, feeding birds and squirrels. His squirrels were the fattest on the block. He was a member of Heritage United Pentecostal Church (UPC) in Bend. He sat on the church boards of various UPC churches in both Virginia and Oregon. Promoting overseas missions was another interest, investing as much as possible throughout the years. In January 1986, James was appointed for a two-year term on the inaugural board for Compassion Services International (CSi) which has now grown to be a worldwide rapid response disaster relief charity. James is survived by sons Michael (Melinda) O’Donnell, Stephen (Lynette) O’Donnell, daughters Linda O’Donnell, Mary Weavers, Susan O’Donnell, six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great- great-grandchild, one sister-in-law, several nieces, and nephews. The funeral service is at 2:00pm, Saturday, March 23 at Heritage UPC, 213 NW Lafayette Ave, Bend. Interment service at graveside will be Monday, March 25, 2024 at 11:00 AM in Greenwood Cemetery, Bend.
