Edna M. Uptain

Bend, Oregon Edna Marie Uptain (nee Rutherford, nee Andrew), age 91, lifetime resident of Bend, Oregon passed away surrounded by her entire family on Saturday January 21, 2017. Edna was born in Tumalo, Oregon on October 30, 1925. She was a graduate of Redmond High School and attended a business college in Portland, Oregon. She spent her early working career with Shevlin Hixon, then after having children she finished her career with Brooks Scanlon, retiring in the late 1980s. Edna married Vernal (Sam) Uptain in 1965 and had an active life of fishing, hunting, camping, and playing cards with family and friends with him until Sam died in 1994. She remained dedicated to his memory and spoke often of her time with Sam and his commitment to her and her sons. Edna was known for her kindness, warm smile, generosity, her strong-willed independence and her tireless dedication to raising her four sons. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and she had a tremendous impact on her sons, her grandchildren and great grandchildren her love was truly unconditional and felt by all. She loved to read and play card games her family plans to always dedicate their card games to her memory. Edna was preceded in death by her father, Walter Andrew; mother, Vida Andrew (nee Bollman) ; sister, Emily Gill; brother, John Andrew; and husband, Sam Uptain. She is survived by her sister, Leora Swenson; sons Dan Rutherford, John Rutherford, Gary Rutherford (and spouse Lori Rutherford), and Pat Rutherford; grandchildren, Brian Rutherford, Kara Rutherford-Cano (and spouse Jonathan Canol, Megan Rutherford, Lane Rutherford, Clayton Rutherford, Tony Gordon, Christopher Gordon, Max Mello, Mindy Mathers; and great-grandchildren Ciel Cano, Asher Cano, and Marlie Cano. A memorial service is planned for Fri., Feb. 3, 2017 at 11 AM at Niswonger-Reynolds Chapel, Bend. . In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Hospice of Redmond, as they were indispensable in making Ednas last months on earth comfortable and peaceful.
